I'm about 7 weeks preggo and desire a homebirth. How do most Midwives feel about dysautonomia? Does that push me into the "too high risk" population? I would like to hear your opinions...I exercise and stay hydrated, but I have slowly come off of my beta-blocker...

isnt" dysautonomia" a wide range of disorders of the ANS raqther than ne speficis set of problems? it seems t me there are many degrees and types, with many possible symptom patterns, and the severity and type of dysregulation that you have would say something about what the potential risks are to you in birthing, whether at home or in a medical setting. you say you wre taking beta-blockers...what kinds of heart trouble were you having? other symptoms and signs?

hmmm...well, i was having palpitations with shortness of breath, nightmares, flushing, anxiety, GI issues...and some other things. my MD says i had enough adrenaline in my body for 5 people :) i was working at night, too, and i think that made it worse. now i work days and do other non-medicinal things to keep my symptoms at bay like push fluids, rest, ban caffeine, get exercise...i was taking beta-blockers to block some of the adrealine. the only symptoms i'm having right now are heart flutters when i get too dehydrated. other than that i feel great. i've just heard that mamas with dysautonomia shouldn't be allowed to labor for too long or get dehydrated while in labor, since they are naturally hypovolemic.
i believe i am healthy and i believe i can give birth naturally...i just want to know if when i start interviewing Midwives, should i expect this to be an issue? thanks Judith

well, if I were a midwife attending home births, which I'm not at this time, I'd want to know about a tendency toward something like hypovolemic shock, especially in the event that there was any significant blood loss. and I;d want to read up and talk with thers who had helped women who;d had porbles with this.you ight want to talk with really experienced home birth midwives, including the Farm Midwifery enter in Tennessee, to see if they ahve experience with anything like this.all that being said, I;ve known women with what sunds like even ore serious medical conditions who chose to have unassisted home births and did fine..not recommending it, not discouraging it either, just noting that soe woen feel that strongly about intervention in birthing.

it does sound as though you have taken any steps in selfcare that have helped bring this to a manageable level and have been able todiscontinue medication.I'll need to read your post over...are you pregnant now, or just planning on it?

some MWs would probably risk you out; there;s a lot of variation on that.

I have a tendency toward a migraine-like headache and related syndrome, which is thought now to be por communication between smpathetic and parasympathetic NS. some herbal medicines ight help mediate this commuication, especially if there;s too much adrenaline (AKA ephineprine) going. there might be some really skilled herbalists around who ahve dealt with dysautonia; it;s delivate because ost horone systems are negative feedback loops and an external agent (say, a medicine, herbal or pharmaceutical) that stops one aspect of the loop can thus trigger ore of that sae substance or its precursors to be made...

        make sense?

I illr ead up ore on this...thanks for the background.hope this is a little helpful.
