Unassisted Home Breech Birth...?

What do you say to dear friends who are deciding to go ahead without their midwife (as it's illegal in their state for a home delivery of a breech presentation) and proceed alone? I've had a home birth and loved it, I was born at home myself! My midwife is amazing (she caught me for crying out loud!) but I also know that she is very cautious about any problems that may arise to hinder a safe birth journey at home...
Anyone out there who has had a similar experience? I know breech birth happens, but am I wrong in my understanding (of what I have read at least) that most folks were not aware of a breech presentation, and just go with the flow?
This is the Mama's second baby and second home delivery as well... it is my friend's (Dad) first baby tho... They have tried MANY methods to get the little one to move and no luck... and sooo, since the baby being breech is a known fact, how could one give the right support, besides just waiting on baited breath and prayers?
Thanks in advance!

I know people who have had unassisted breeches and felt great about it and had great outcomes. (think the two are linked.) I became clsoe online friends, if such a thing xists and I believe it can and does, with a group of women who were really hardcore unassisted, including Laura Shanley who wrote the book about it, literally, and a bunch of the founders of the original unassisted discussion group on yahoo! back when it was Onelist. I've also known some people who went UC and had unfortunate outcomes. my feeling at this point is that there are risks with ANY path one takes in birthing, whether it is medical model, midwifery model, or unassisted/"unhindered" model.

Laura's website www.laurashanley.com has a bunch of breech solo and unassisted tales.

I don;t counsel either way, and my one home birthing...one birthing...was with a midwife. laura;s book had just come out and i read it at a friend;s house and felt that she seemed to have something to "prove" that i didn;t...later we became friends and I adopted some of the UC birthing mindset, but I am also aware that it doesn;t work for everyone.

about 3% of babies present breech at term. that's not a huge percentage but it means it's three times as common as twins. there are some excellent "how to supervise a breech" instructions in recent editions of both Spiritual Midwifery (Ina May Gaskin)and Heart and Hands (Elizabeth Davis.) there is probably also something useful in the Gregory White book on emergency childbirth, whichI've read but don't have..we had a lesson on breech birth as part of the minimal emergency childbirth training you get in EMT school. the main things are to maintain an open airway and support the perineum. my own feeling about most dads at birthings, especially unassisted birthings, is Dad the type to stay calm and focused when his first baby is being born? hard to predict I know, but could be the critical factor unless he can take a back seat and let mom do most of the work.

knowledge is power, and the best thing they can do is read up on breeches. will the midwife provide emergency advice or backup by phone, or is that too risky for her legally?

thank you to both of you! I'm not sure if the midwife is going to be offering any advice, from the sounds of it, no...
I was able to talk to my midwife today and ask her about her experiences with breech births... she's delivered a few of them, many with different outcomes, tho no one has lost a baby yet... (she did have to resuscitate her first breech, tho he's a healthy grown man now...) and so i'm hoping to be able to get in touch with my friends... thank you so much for the resources! I'll let you all know how things are/have gone when I get word...

I also think that it greatly depends on the breech position.
If the baby is perfectly tucked but bottoms down it isn't that much different. If the baby isn t tucked and kind of in a flailing position or sideways position, that if course will be very difficult.
My second was head down but presented the forehead instead of occiputal, that was almost impossible to get through.
Spinningbabies.com gives some good tips and exercises for turning, cat-cow on all fours is a position know for turning/replacing the baby.
